Elysium (2013)

elysium

run time: 109 mins
rated: 14A
considered: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster

movie summary: Set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. (www.imdb.com)

my thoughts: Matt Damon stars as a ordinary guy named Max who lives on planet Earth in the year 2154. He is a convicted criminal who is one of the lucky few to have employment making droids for Elysium. Elysium is a space station where all the wealthy people of the world have moved to escape poverty and disease. Jodie Foster plays Delacore, Elysium’s Secretary of Defense who is responsible for protecting the atmosphere and prevent any non-citizens from entering their new world.

Max has a workplace accident where he becomes contaminated with radiation. He is given five days to life, but if he able to get to a medical bay on Elysium, he can be healed. Max turns to an old pal named Spider (Wagner Moura) who hi jacks Elysium ships and tries to storm the space station on a regular basis. Spider asks Max to kidnap billionaire John Carlyle who is on earth, and after he pulls that off he will be able to write his own ticket. Max is then equipped with droid software in his brain and nervous system to aid him in the kidnap of Carlyle. The kidnapping goes bad, Max gets injured, but manages to gather the secret information they were after. Delacore learns of the events and requests Max to be brought up to Elysium. Once there, Max sets out to use the secret information in his mind to make things right for everyone back on Earth.

Elysium is a decent Sci-Fi action movie, although I can’t compare to Neill Blomkamn’s other hit movie Distract 9 . Summed up, this movie is simply a different take on the spoils of the riches and the difficulties of the poor.

my star rating: 5 out 10
