my thoughts: When I first saw the trailer for About Time, my original thoughts were this movie would be another story about time traveling featuring Rachel McAdams. Instead this movie presents a funny approach to traveling back in time to change certain events for a more desired outcome.

Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) is your everyday not good-looking guy who has the worse possible timing. He’s never had a girlfriend in his life, and despite his dream of leaving his small town, he really just wants to fall in love. On his 21st birthday, his dad (Bill Nighy) pulls him aside and tells him the family secret, that the men in the family can time travel.

At first Tim doesn’t believe it, but after trying it out a few times he gets the hang of it. He looks to use his new secret power to his advantage and finally get a girlfriend. On night he meets the girl of his dreams, Mary (Rachel McAdams), he learns the hard way that time travel has its flaws and problems. A few hours after their dinner he travels back to deal with a family problem, but when he returns to the present there is no Mary. He begins a hilarious game of finding the perfect moment to meet her all over again without becoming a creepy stalker.

Soon the couple get engaged before getting married and having two kids. Tim doesn’t travel back as much as he used to, but soon his sister develops a drinking problem and barely survives a car crash. He tries his best to change her life decisions, but shortly after that his father gets ill. Tim now has to face the harsh reality that traveling back in time may not solve every problem or prevent the future from happening.

About Time is not really a romantic movie, but is a laugh out loud comedy about the ability to fix and redo any awkward moments in life. Everytime Tim does something stupid, he says “excuse me for a minute” and gets a redo of the previous moment. Dohmnall Gleeson fits his character’s description and personality very well, but doesn’t appear to be the right mate for Rachel McAdam’s beauty. Bill Nighy is really funny playing the charming and thoughtful father figure. The movie doesn’t go into much details about the characters or their relationships, but rather focuses on certain moments and brings them to forefront. I feel the message of the movie is that even with special abilities, no one can never escape the fact they are mortal.

my star rating: 6 out 10.
