movie summary: Pat Solitano Jr (Bradley Cooper) is spending time in a mental health hosiptal for his bio-polar disorder when he is finally released into the custody of mom Dolores (Jacki Weaver). When they return home Pat Jr surprises his dad Pat Sr. (Robert DeNiro) who disapproves of his release and doesn’t think he’s ready yet to return home. Pat Jr vows he’s a changed man who is on a mission to reclaim his life and wife Nikki, despite losing his teaching job and having a restraining order against him.
Every night Pat Jr goes upstairs to his room in the attic and reads books from his old high school syallbus. On several occasions he doesn’t agree what he has just read and his bio-polar disorder kicks in, so he’ll wake his parents up to yell and scream about how stupid these authors are. At this point of his life he has no friends, so outside of visiting his court-appointed therapist Dr. Patel (Anupam Kher), he takes up jogging everyday to get some exercise. While out on a jog one day he bumps into an old pal of his, Ronnie (John Ortiz), who invites him to dinner with his wife Veronica (Julia Styles) and her sister Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence).
Dinner is going quite well until Tiffany begins to argue with her sister and demands that Pat take her home. She offers to take him up to her place and sleep with him, but he’s wearing a football jersey and she doesn’t find that attractive. Over the next few days Tiffany goes out of her way to bump into Pat during his jog which leads to a dinner date at a restraurant. Pat finds out Tiffany is friends with Nikki and agrees to deliver a note between the two in exchange for Pat to do something for her in return. Tiffany is a dancer and was suppose to participate in a dance competition but needs a partner.
Pat writes a letter to Nikki, gives it to Tiffany, and begins to practice dance moves with her everyday for weeks. He feels that if Nikki can see him she’ll know he’s trying to become a better person and she’ll come back to him. Tiffany takes the letter, delivers it, and gets a response. She holds it hostage when Pat begins to slack off on his training, but after a great rehearsal she gives it to him. He is estactic about the response and can’t wait to perform at the competition because Nikki said she’d be there.
Additional pressure gets put on Tiffany and Pat Jr to perform at the competition when Pat Sr wages a bet with one of his gambling friends. The Philadelphia Eagles are playing a playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys so Pat Sr bets all his money he has saved up to start a restaraunt that the Eagles will win and the pair dance to a score of 5 out 10. The football game goes in their favor when the Eagles upset the Cowboys, but Tiffany gets in a bad mood because Pat Jr is more excited to see Nikki then win the competition, which means a lot to her. She decides to hit up the bar and get drunk before Pat finds her seconds before they perform. The pair dance and earn a score of 5 points to win the bet.
Tiffany is brought to tears and leaves after Pat darts off to speak to Nikki. After their brief talk Pat hugs Nikki and says good bye before looking for Tiffany, who he ends up chasing down the street.
my thoughts: Silver Linings Playbook is hands down one of the best movies released in 2012. Jennifer Lawrence steals the show away from Bradley Cooper and proves that she is more then a teenage movie actress, and that she can tackle and succeed in any adult role. I can admit that I never liked Jennifer before this movie but after watching her as Tiffany I started to see what other people like in her. The story’s main focus is on Bradley Cooper’s Pat Jr, who is superb showcasing bio-polar characteristics and chasing the dream of getting his wife back, but Lawrence’s Tiffany shows up and steal the story away from him. She has her own issues and manages to open Pat Jr up to see there is more to life then getting what he once had back. The pair have amazing on-screen chemistry and really draw off each other to keep the story moving and build up their own characters. The supporting cast with DeNiro, Weaver, Kher, and Chris Tucker all contribute to the story with their own persception of the situation, while dragging their own drama into the life of Pat Jr and Tiffanys that only complicates things even more.
This movie recieved a lot of nominations for Golden Globes and Acamedy Awards which was well earned. The two stars and supporting cast provide audiences with a modern day romance story where no one is perfect and dealing with complications in today’s society shouldn’t prevent two people from being together.
