movie summary: Mr. Peabody and Sherman is a cartoon from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show which was a big hit in the 1960’s. The duo was brought back to life for their first animated feature film in 2014.

Mr. Peabody is one of the world’s smartest people with a degree from Harvard despite the fact he is a dog. One night while out on a walk he discovers a baby abounded an alley, so decides to go through the legal process to adopt the baby and name him Sherman. Together the pair are inseparable as Sherman grows up and Peabody teaches him everything. Finally the day has come when Sherman must go to school for the first time where he gets in trouble on the very first day. After his classmate Penny teases him for being stupid Sherman bites her. Mr. Peabody is called into to deal with the situation which has been blown out of proportion, so child services steps in and threatens to take Sherman away.

In an attempt to smooth the situation over Mr. Peabody invites Penny’s parents along with Ms. Gruinon from child services over for dinner. Sherman promises to be a good boy but Penny is not happy hanging out with him. She teases about how stupid he is and that he doesn’t know anything about history, so in an attempt to prove Penny wrong he shows her Mr. Peabody’s WABAC time machine. The kids hop in and travel back to ancient Egypt where they create a timeline problem. Sherman rushes back after Penny turns into Cleopatra and refuses to leave, which forces Mr. Peabody to stop dinner and perform a rescue operation.

Penny agrees to marry King Tut before Mr. Peabody and Sherman show up and pretend to be Gods to postpone the wedding. They all hop in the WABAC before it runs out of fuel and they crash back in the Renaissance period where Mr. Peabody meets his old pal Leonardo Da Vinci. They manage to recharge the time machine before hitting a black hole on the way home that leads them to the time of the Trojan War. Things go wrong during this pit stop which leads to Mr. Peabody getting killed. Sherman and Penny manage to escape and head back to the present in an attempt to fix their previous mistakes.

When they reach present day New York City, Penny’s parents are furious and Ms. Gruinon has made up her mind to take Sherman away. Penny explains what they just experienced during their time traveling adventure when a black hole forms over the high raise and begins to dump pyramids, trojan war ships, and famous historical people from the sky. Mr. Peabody is nowhere to be seen but that is the least of the problems. Sherman and Penny must figure out how to stop the black hole, restore everything back to the right historical time, and bring Mr. Peabody back before it’s to late.

my thoughts: I can vaguely remember watching Mr. Peabody and Sherman as a kid even though my uncle loves Rocky and Bullwinkle. I learnt more from the trailer and the movie itself then I ever knew before in terms of who these characters were and what their story is. The end result is very disappointing and not really creative at all.

This movie actually put me to sleep during the screening because it is not geared towards adults, and in my personal opinion, isn’t really meant for kids either. There are very few one liners and funny moments that I laughed because I was like “oh that was meant to be funny, but it wasn’t”. The storyline itself is very recycled for 2014 but a time traveling dog and his son was an original idea back in the 1960’s. Many kids will not understand or know much about ancient Egypt, the Trojan warriors, or other famous American personalities even when they are presented in a cute animated fashion.

Parents will bring their kids to see this movie with the hope they will be entertained and they themselves will be able to relive one of their favourite childhood cartoons, but be prepared to waste your money and leave disappointed. You won’t be disappointed about the characters and the way they are presented, just the story and movie itself as a whole.
