movie summary: James King (Will Farrell) is one of the richest brokers in Los Angeles. He has everything a multimillionaire could ever want including a beautiful fiancé, a huge house, and a brand new promotion as a partner with his firm. Everything is going great until the FBI raid his house and arrest him for fraud and for stealing millions from customers. Sentenced to a decade in San Quentin, James will turn to the black guy who details his car, Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart), to teach him how to survive in prison. Darnell needs the money for his family so agrees to help James despite the fact he’s never actually been to prison. Chaos will ensue when two complete idiots try their best to survive life in prison when neither of them have a clue what they are talking about.

my thoughts: I had zero desire to catch Get Hard but decided to break down after two friends told me that it was funny and they would give it six stars. Going into the movie I totally expected to get let down because every time I get excited to see a Will Farrell movie I end up leaving the theatre pissed off I wasted my money. Let’s be honest here, Will Farrell is actually not that funny. Kevin Hart is almost in the same boat (insert some boos here), but come on, when was the last time you went into a Hart movie and left the theatre amazed at the movie you just watched. Sure I loved Think Like a Man 1/2 but was About Last Night that good? What about Ride Along? I rest my case.

Get Hard only works because it pins two complete opposite characters and actors together and forces them to give us something crazy and over the top. A few people have asked me since yesterday what I thought about it and the first thing I say is the story sucked, they replied “well we already knew that” what about the movie? Well if you knew this was going to suck why are you asking me my opinion. You already knew what I was going to say. There was nothing in this movie that would have ever got me to like it. In fact the only time I was laughing is when Darnell and James were bickering back and forth with nothing but swear words.

Out of the two main characters Hart was the better actor and was more over the top than Farrell was. When Farrell appears in a movie he plays the same kind of character every time, the one who thinks he’s sexy, funny, and over sells his emotions. Hart is famous for being a short feisty guy who shouts his lines, thinks he’s the coolest guy around, and that he knows everything. He was more entertaining in this role because he has zero clue of what he’s doing and just puts the program together on the fly. There’s always going to be a problem with this design, but thanks to his creativity he’s able to recover and keep the story moving forward.

Farrell’s character is pretty stale through out and was not someone I wanted to get behind at any point. He is as dumb as a bag of nails because he never even spent a single minute of his 30 days trying to prove his innocence. Although with 24 hours to go, a light bulb goes off in his head which leads to one of the funniest parts of the whole film. Darnell just sits there with this look on his face, the look like he was going to knock James out for being so stupid. I thought the whole scene was pretty funny and stupid, kinda like the movie as a whole.

my final thoughts: At the end of the day I wouldn’t recommend paying full price or even movie theatre prices to watch Get Hard. If you like to laugh out loud to a bunch racist jokes and how crazy prison life can be, then by all means fork over $14 (Canadian prices $11.11 USD) to see it. Get Hard is bound to get a lot of watches on Netflix, the place where Will Ferrell could make a killing on movie releases…kinda like what Adam Sandler is doing now. I know some of you will love this movie and think I’m crazy for not having the time of my life watching it, but hey we all find different types of comedy to our liking.

my star rating: 4 out 10

imdb: 6.3 out 10
metascore: 34/100
rottentomatoes: 30% out 100%
roger ebert: 2 out 4

    1. Thanks Dan. On their own these guys can be funny, but together they just never clicked. Although if I had to choose I’d take Hart over Ferrell any day.

    1. Exactly. I felt the same about The Wedding Ringer, all the funny parts were in the trailer and the rest of the movie was meh.
