Argumentative August #39 – The Rainmaker (1997) – tenstarsorless.com
Rob and I would like to once again welcome you to another review for our Argumentative August Blogathon. This next film, The Rainmaker is being reviewed by myself here at tenstarsorless.com. Let’s see what I thought of this movie….
I’m gonna go off the charts here and say the aspect of this film I liked the most was Jon Voight’s character. He was a slim ball lawyer for a major insurance company who is a veteran at playing the game in the courtroom. The big bad insurance company may be the actual villain in this story, but Voight’s character is the one you can’t wait to see everyday in the halls of justice.
What didn’t I like?
Matt Damon goes and falls in love with a very troubled girl played by Claire Danes. Not that I had anything against their relationship, the crimes they commit, or anything else, it was just this angle of the story makes him look weak. Sure he is a first time trial lawyer with not much life experience, but this love affair really shows his weakness to help people and how it could result with him going to jail.
Was The Rainmaker a good story?
To be quiet honest with all of you, if you have seen any story about the poor/sick suing a major insurance company about bad benefits, then you’ve seen The Rainmaker. Much like every other trial and court room movie, it’s not always about the story being told but the characters who bring it to life. Damon and his sidekick Danny DeVito may work for one of the dirtiest criminals in the south, but both have a good heart and take this insurance case because they believe their clients have been wronged. Their unorthodox approach to getting information and attempts to stay one step ahead of the evil defense lawyers was amusing.
This movie boils down to two main characters, Damon and Voight. Without these two heavyweights going toe to toe you really don’t have much of a movie here. Damon is so young and innocent looking here that he is able to pull off his character with ease and charm. Voight is very established by this point and known to play a ruthless bad guy which suits his character quite well.
Would I recommend it?
I’d only recommend The Rainmaker for those interested in the early works of Damon’s career. Nothing else about this movie screams watch me except if you wanna see a major company get sued for millions of dollars like so many other movies.
