Argumentative August #34 – In the Bedroom (2001) – tenstarsorless.com
Rob and I would like to once again welcome you to another review for our Argumentative August Blogathon. This next film, In the Bedroom is being reviewed by myself here at tenstarsorless.com. Let’s see what I thought of this movie….
I got to be honest here and say I don’t have an answer to this. I’m not trying to cut this review short or waste your time, but I seriously didn’t like anything about this movie, except the fact that it was filmed in Maine. Growing up in New Hampshire, some of the towns they talk about in the movie were close to home and listening to Marissa Tomei talk with a heavy New England was kinda awesome.
What didn’t I like?
I didn’t like this whole movie. When Rob and I agreed to do this blogathon I was excited to choose this movie since I don’t recall ever seeing it but always wanting too. Now I can say I did and it put me right to sleep the first time through. I had to watch the final 33 minutes the following day because I couldn’t stand the slow pace and non courtroom drama. Seriously how on earth could In the Bedroom be on the list of Top 50 court room dramas?? Also how could this movie ever be considered the best film of the year??
Was In the Bedroom a good story?
I’d say In the Bedroom is not a good story. If you watch the trailer the movie is going to disappoint. This movie’s main theme is whether or not to get revenge for a past wrong when the system doesn’t work in your favour. The rest is just fall out from an event that moves at a slower pace than a snail.
About 90% of this movie follows the daily movements of Tom Wilkinson’s character. He is a grieving man whose marriage is pretty much over and he sits at work every day debating on whether to get revenge or not. Sissy Spacek could have been played by anyone and they could have given us the same performance. William Mapother is the only other character worth mentioning because he was quite the bad guy. Don’t get your hopes up for a lot of Tomei because she is not in this film much.
Would I recommend it?
Personally I would never ever recommend this movie to anyone. On the other hand this movie received such high praise and has pretty high scores across the board which means someone somewhere should watch it sometime. Good luck to those who do.
