When Sinister hit theatres back in 2012, it was a fresh new look into the “boogeyman” story. We got to see how powerful he really was and the methods of which he lures innocent kids into committing gruesome murders. Lucky for us in Sinister II, the writers managed to come up with new and exciting ways to kill people. Oh they also stepped up the music soundtrack, if those horrifying beats don’t give you goosebumps I don’t know what will.
What didn’t I like?
This movie is more creepy than scary. If you go into this film to get that jump out of your seat experience, it won’t happen. There are a lot more pieces to this story compared to the first one, which sucks because they could have focused more time on scaring us instead of boring us.
Was Sinister II a good story?
I would say Sinister II is a sub par horror movie because as straight forward as this story is, there’s not much going on for parlor tricks with the exception of creepy 8mm old movies. Some people will be disappointed with the abusive dad, the stupid cop, the ignorant mother, and the creepy dead kids although everything does tie in together quite nicely at the end. It is hard not to compare this second film with the first one, but I can’t help it. This one does not equal the original.
James Ransone did an amazing job carrying on the fight against Bughuul after suffering a major injury. I say that with a bunch of sarcasm because it seems impossible not to be in any sort of pain for a good chunk of the movie. Pretty much everyone else in this story is interchangeable. Sadly no Hollywood big names were attached to the project which could hurt the box office draw. I guess some other credit needs to go out to the make up team for making Bughuul look terrifying.
Would I recommend it?
There are two other movies that opened this weekend and they may gross more than Sinister II. I am on the fence about this film because it’s a creepy movie not a horror movie. The majority of the masses will flock to dark theatres to watch this film because we are all suckers for horror movies. I’d say this isn’t worth the price of Friday night admission, but in the middle of the week go catch the late show before heading home to bed and the nightmares that may come of it!
