If you look up the user reviews for Roman J. Israel, Esq. you will most certainly be scared away. The low scores didn’t frighten me and we checked it out yesterday afternoon, in a theatre filled with so many older people. Denzel Washington has the star power to draw people of all ages into his movies, despite the content in the story. This story about an attorney caught up in some drama was slow-moving at points which left me waiting and waiting for a major plot turning event to happen. It took a long time but when it finally happened, there was about 30 minutes left and sadly didn’t have the huge impact I had hoped for. Roman is quite a weird character and with a unique personality which shows Denzel’s true acting abilities. Despite the lack of a solid story here, there is a point to everything that happens. I feel like Roman was a guy who tried his best to help people become better people. Whether that is the meaning of the movie or his story, only you can decide. 4/10
