Take Shelter (2011)

There many different kinds of films, those driven by character performances, those driven by story, and those with no real direction at all. Take Shelter was recommended to me many years ago and I finally got around to watching it the other night. Michael Shannon is really one of this generation’s most talented actors, despite always getting typecast in “bad” guy roles. Although he usually excels in those situations, in Take Shelter his visions, mental problem awareness, and craziness is what drives this story from start to finish. There will be a lot of you out there that can’t sit through this slow-paced thriller because there’s no action except in his dreams. You’ll wait around for the big reveal at the end, even though short, and decide if it was worth waiting for. It is a pretty powerful scene and is really the reason for the visions and the craziness. I thought this was one of the better character driven performances from an actor with such versatility. 8/10
