Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice (2002)

There are great movies, filled with amazing actors, built around solid stories didn’t never needed a sequel. Slap Shot is probably the greatest hockey movie all time, and to celebrate 25 years since its original release, we got Slap Shot 2. This was a direct to DVD movie which meant it was garbage and destined to live forever in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart. The only thing that links this film with the original is the Hanson brothers. Those crazy tough as nails brawlers are back and still playing the style all these years later. Surrounded by a bunch of crazy teammates, like a psycho goalie who needs meds to survive off the ice, a sex addictive teammate who sleeps with everyone, a show boat player who thinks he’s going to the show so is very selfish, and of course a coach who is a walking train wreck of gambling debts and personal demons. Throw in a female coach and a different style of hockey and you have a recipe for disaster. The story is really bad and nowhere near as good as the first one, but this film has a lot of character and a lot of hilarious one-liners that makes this just as entertaining as the first one. Nothing really makes sense and this could never play out in the real (I think), but these guys are really loveable losers and you can’t help but cheer for them. I can still try to use the funny lines from this movie around the rink, although Slap Shot 2 is a lesser known movie that most people would never give the time of day to. You’ll laugh, you’ll sigh, you’ll want your time back, and you’ll probably want to watch it again. 6/10
