Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Crazy Rich Asians is the best movie I’ve seen in 2018. I know that Paddington 2 got a perfect score from me, but this film won me over for a variety of different reasons. Personally I don’t care if this movie wins any awards or if they even make a sequel, Crazy Rich Asians is pure gold all on its own. Despite the fact that I was only familiar with one star in the entire cast, they all played their parts perfectly in a story that is captivating and inspiring.

It is comical how the rich live. There are those who don’t value money and do crazy things with their time and earnings. Then there are those who value their status, safeguard it, while living to a standard none of us common folk will ever understand. You will see it all in this movie. The idiots will have you on the floor laughing, while the snobby ones will piss you off beyond words. I can only imagine what this kind of lifestyle would be like, but the one thing most people don’t really understand is that even the rich suffer through the same problems as the rest of us.

What won me over was this tragic love story of an ordinary girl who falls in love with the Prince of Shanghai, although she doesn’t have a clue who he is. Some will say this story is cliché, that the elements of the story are just bits and pieces from other romantic comedies and they didn’t break the mold here. The fact is, they didn’t need to change the game, they just needed to alter the narrative. They say opposites attract and even though this is the main theme of the movie, it is not actually the whole message. Our main characters fall for each other and both are down to earth people. They believe in each other and are willing to sacrifice true love for old traditions. Despite their different upbringings, they share similar beliefs, which is the foundation of their great relationship.

This movie is the perfect date movie. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and leave with the biggest smile on your face. Crazy Rich Asians may be over the top in so many ways, but I bet the cast and film crew had an epic time making this movie. Even if you don’t think this movie is for you, trust me when I say there is something for everyone in what could be considered the summer’s surprise hit. 9.5/10
