A Star is Born (2018)

If you loved A Star is Born, please stop reading now.

I hated this movie because it is so unrealistic from start to finish. Even in the world of instant fame and fortune, there is absolutely no way a mega rock star like Jack (Bradley Cooper) would find a girl like Ally (Lady Gaga) in a bar and turn her into something bigger than himself. It also happened overnight. That wasn’t natural, that stuff never happens. You can’t dress up in a drag bar one night and then perform the next night in front of a sold-out stadium. How gullible do they think we are? This “snap your fingers” superstardom is what pissed me off and as the movie progressed I was like this all BS. To be quite honest, the radio forced fed me Shallow so many times before the movie even hit theatres, I was disposed to disliking it before the opening credits.

I am not sorry that A Star is Born got no awards recently at the Golden Globes because they don’t deserve it. Sure, Cooper was a solid second choice in the best actor category because he did do everything he could be a washed-up drunk superstar who couldn’t get out of his own way. Does he deserve an Oscar, not really, because there were better leading actor performances this past year. When you break it all down, his acting was the only real thing about the movie. He was so out of it most of the movie, I’m surprised they did not ask Woody Harrellson to play the part of a drunk guy, it would have just come naturally for him.

Everyone knows I love romance and I love to watch people fall in love. Cooper and Gaga may be one of the most powerful on-screen couples in recent memory, I just didn’t see the passion in their performances. This film focused so much on the music and Cooper’s downfall, I never felt the deep connection people have claimed is the best part of the entire movie.

This is the fourth telling of the same tale. People mock film companies for not coming up with fresh ideas, and this is another perfect example. I’ll never be able to please all the fans who would die defending this movie’s honour, while I also know I won’t even make the biggest haters happy either. 3/10
