The Intruder is another new release that is getting slaughtered by critics and audiences everywhere. Although it was scheduled for an earlier release, The Intruder invaded the theatre scene two weeks ago to most people’s disappointment. The film currently has a 5.4 rating on IMDb and a 29% rating on RottenTomatoes. I feel the biggest aspect of the project that most people would hate is how predictable the story ended up being.
Despite a handful of flaws, which include several intense breathing scenes, this movie was entertaining. There are a handful of jump scares to keep you on your toes, and the movie will shock you with an epic twist towards the end. The final showdown between the husband (Michael Ealy) and intruder (Dennis Quaid) is rather lacklustre. I didn’t see the ultimate reveal coming and you probably didn’t either, but if you did then I applaud your in-depth movie watching habits.
There are many moments where you’ll chuckle, there are cliche moments where you know Meagan Good is just asking for trouble, and of course, there are the moments you realize that this movie could actually happen. Filmed out in Napa Valley where neighbours are few and far in between, in a land where a gun can be a man’s best friend. There are some really crazy people out there who could pull something like this off. When you stop and think about it, we take all these kind of movies for granted. We enjoy watching others suffer and think we know that we would react better if caught in a similar situation. That’s why we keep packing the house when these movies get released. We don’t go because the story will be good or bad, we go because we think we are better than the characters and we want to see how they would fail when we wouldn’t.
The Intruder will definitely head to a streaming service where it will live on forever. You may be wise to catch it there or you may skip it altogether. Either way, I enjoyed it. 6/10
