I have written reviews about many sequels and franchises on my blog, and there is one theme I can’t help myself from repeating over and over. Why do studios find something successful and decide we need more of it, only to water everything about it down and ruin good ideas? Flint Lockwood (Bill Harder) gave us larger than tall building size food, only to destroy his home island and force the world to reevaluate its view on food. So in the sequel, Flint tries to get into inventor school, where the head of the school turns out to be our bad guy. There really wasn’t a “bad guy” in the first one, except for a machine brought to life to make food and a greedy mayor who wanted to make his town world-renowned. Not only does this bad guy want that machine, but the device has also gone even more rogue in this one and has created food creatures instead of editable food. Flint steps on every personal land mind possible, destroying relationships and friendships for another chance at fame. Cloudy 2 showcases how bad some people can get when their mind is focused on all the wrong things. Fame and success come at a price, but sometimes it ends up costing you more than you could ever imagine to achieve it. This movie was a little tougher to sit through because everything fun and exciting about the first one was not here. Cute food creatures were not enough to save the story or writing, which explains why this may have been the final instalment of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise. 4/10
