Birds of Prey (2020)

A few years ago, Suicide Squad gave us a whole bunch of new DC characters to love and buy merchandise for. In case you missed it, though, Margot Robbie gave a show-stealing performance of Harley Quinn, Joker’s best girl.

Fast forward to 2020 and DC is just coasting on fumes until Wonder Woman comes in to save the day. Birds of Prey stumbled so far out of the gate that the studio shorten the movie title after just a few days. The original title of this nonsense film was “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn.”

This movie really wasn’t about Harley Quinn, the brewing trouble of Gotham city, or even the rest of the “Birds of Prey.” Except for Quinn’s character, no one is given enough background for us to care about them, their past, their present, or their future.

I was disengaged and uninterested for most of the movie. I’m slowly starting to dislike Robbie and the roles she takes on. Her portrayal of Harley Quinn may be bang on, but it just didn’t work for me. I can’t stand it. I don’t like it. She didn’t deserve her own movie, let alone one as messy as this one.

I can see why this movie bombed. It was probably slapped together while the real workers at DC were focused on other projects. I know I won’t be the only one who disliked it, and I applaud those who actually like this wildfire of a film. 2/10
