Emma (2020)

For the umpteen time in my life, I went to watch a movie that made absolutely no sense to me.

It was hard to watch Emma (2020) starring Anya Taylor-Joy without thinking about Emma (1996) starring Gwyneth Paltrow. I remember seeing that older movie while in high school, so the biggest question I got today is, why did we need another version of a classic story?

Like it has been pointed out here, and across many other places online, that Hollywood has run out of ideas. If they can’t create a new CGI superhero movie, they choose to just recycle older movies for another generation.

I was bored out of my mind watching this girl Emma try to set everyone up, except herself. The kicker to her matchmaker abilities is she is very keen on destroying any and all these friendships/relationships, including her own. Her own love match is staring her right in the face, but instead of pursuing that, she’s too preoccupied with setting up people who don’t even go together.

The worse part of the entire film is Bill Nighy. Why on earth did he sign on to this project? Sad to see how this guy must be so desperate for some spending cash that he’d take on a role where he claims to be “cold” the entire time.

Emma got released before the plague took over the globe, which is sad because I would have chosen to get sick than sit through this movie. Okay, it wasn’t that bad, but still. This period piece film didn’t need a modern version, and you don’t need to waste your time on it. 1/10
