I will not be ashamed to admit that I own Forces of Nature on DVD. To be quite honest, it has been a long time since I watched the movie, but recently we finally got around to it. Upon a recent viewing, I have no clue why I still own the film because I released how flawed it really is.
Back in the day, this movie was enjoyable. I’ve always liked watching movies with Maura Tierney in them. She’s Ben Affleck’s future wife in this one, that is, if he doesn’t fall in love with his road trip partner played by Sandra Bullock.
Bullock was nearing the crown of Miss Congeniality, while Affleck was on his way to superstardom. However, whoever thought they would make a believable romantic couple was clearly daydreaming. It never dawned on me back then, but all the signs for the mismatch were there. Ben and Sarah have no chemistry at all, yet the story makes you believe that every obstacle they overcome will eventually force them to fall in love.
There were no laughs as Ben and Sarah wreck havoc on the east coast on their way to Georgia, where Ben is about to get married during a hurricane. It is safe to say the entire movie is filled with metaphors. Both our leads are terrified of commitment and refuse to admit otherwise. They also seem like they are mature enough to be at this stage of their lives (marriage and kids).
Forces of Nature ends with a typical happy ending, whether or not you believe the characters deserved it. Many years ago I would have totally recommended this film, especially if you wanted to watch a romantic comedy. Fast forward two decades later and my advice would be to skip it, you are not missing much. 3/10
