Scary Movie is one of a kind. It was also the first of what would be many spoof movies that only got worse as the series continued. However, before we get into those films, let’s start with the first one.
It’s been 20 years since this movie hit theatres, and it is a safe bet that the majority of you have watched or heard about Scary Movie. The movie was meant to make fun of Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer among a handful of other films like the Matrix.
Anna Faris plays Cindy Campbell, the franchise’s main character. She suffers through all the drama and is the killer’s target, who gets a different face depending on the situation he finds himself in. Frais doesn’t get all the attention since Regina Hall is also a star and the Wayan Brothers, Marlon and Shawn.
The biggest reason why this film was successful is all the pop culture references. If you have seen all the movies that this film pokes fun at, you can sit back and laugh at the references. The only problem you may have watching this movie for the first time in 2020 is how outdated those references are. You may have to explain to a younger generation why “what’s up” phone calls are so hilarious.
Scary Movie had a lot to work with and nailed all the jokes it aimed for. The content may not be everyone’s cup of tea, so these movies will have a small fan base. 6/10
